a few of my favourite ladies

Its International Women's Day!
So I thought I'd share a few of my most favourite artist ladies.
Grace Cottington-Smith (Australian)
Grace Crowley(Australian)
Margaret Olley(Australian)
Sonia Delaunay(European)

The Twenties may have been the time for female artists to shine, there is quite a strong representation of women in The Art Gallery of New South Wales permanent collection of this time. I wonder why?
Anyway, I always go and look at Sonia DeLaunay when I am in Canberra. I learnt about her when I was at university and I still love her colour and vibrancy and the story of her life in Paris!
All you beautiful women out there! Go YOU!

polli jewellery

Polli is well known, one of your friends is sure to have a pair of earrings or necklace or brooch by this talented design duo. They are mostly known for their jewellery, which is all designed and made right here in Australia.
I fell in love with their work years ago and it has been a joy to get to know them as people and see where they work and have a little collaboration in the process!
Instagram strikes again - yes the reason why I got to go colour bombing with these ladies was because I saw photos on instagram feed of them mucking around with the powder paint in the lane behind their studio. I commented on how amazing it looked and they invited me to come and play! I made a white Beattie Lanser jumpsuit and had the time of my life! I, old-fashioned though I am love instagram and the way it can create real friendships in the real world! follow them they have a beautiful feed  here.

This week was super exciting as the Polli Crew had their photographs of the bombs printed by Frankie and Swiss onto fabric, which I then sewed up into tops for their trade show this weekend.
see the link on their blog here.
here is a taste of their new collection which they are launching at the moment. Get online and make a purchase! I want so many things but these are my current favourites.
I love beautiful Australian design made by good people.

Little Dandelion

hello chunky knit!
my eyes spotted these amazing knitted rug things in a shop in Charring Cross in Sydney a few weeks ago.
I couldn't stop touching them they are so tactile. Amazing chunky felted knit with the most beautiful colours.
They are the work of  Little Dandelion.

"Motivated by a yearning to get back to the basics, we craft beautiful handmade knitted blankets and throws using Australian wool and eco-friendly linen fabric. Where possible, we always source our materials from local producers and suppliers.
Tired of “sameness” and the notion of “perfection”, Little Dandelion ensures that each piece is a one-of-a kind creation; something sophisticated and quirky all at the same time."
I love everything they stand for and so when looking up their website i found even more amazing pictures of their work!
This may be my favourite blog post or maybe this...and it seems they like instagram too!
I hope you enjoy as much as me!

Recognise

This is a bit of a different post for me but one I felt important to share. It is about music and politics. If you aren't interested in either I suggest you don't read any further!
I went and saw a gig last year at The Factory Theatre in Marrickville Sydney. I have always wanted to see Dan Sultan live and he was doing a gig with the title "Rock for Recognition" supported by Leah Flanagan. Sounded good. So off I went with a couple of friends on a balmy summer evening. As I walked through the doors I got invited to a protest march about indigenous affairs and bustled upstairs to the stage. Firstly, I want to say that Leah Flanagan was a beauty, all red lipped and sexy with a beautiful ukulele in her hands and Dan Sultan did not disappoint both musically and handsomely. But I was introduced to the fact that the indigenous peoples of Australia are not recognised in the Australian Constitution as being the original inhabitants/owners of the land. The artists had quite a few words to share from their own experiences being indigenous people and how they feel about not being recognised, things got a little heated. But Dan Sultan was so gorgeous when he came back on stage to do his encore. He said in regards to encores and going off stage and coming back on (chuckling), "you know some bullshit, is good bullshit". I think he meant it in regards to some things are just words on a page, but they are worth it. They mean something. They are necessary. They make you feel good.
And that is how I came to see that to include the indigenous peoples of Australia in our constitution is important. And there has to be a referendum. We all have to vote on it. And so I have been doing a bit or reading and talking and listening to music since then. To get more educated and to see what others feel and think.
A friend gave me this #recognise badge at christmas (top pic) and it is to raise awareness for the Recognition of our indigenous people.

I also saw Archie Roach at the State Theatre as part of Sydney Festival, and I have to say it was a highlight of my January. What an amazingly talented and beautiful man.I couldn't stop thinking about the man and the music the whole next day. I am still saying, "remember what Archie said..."!. Into the bloodstream is his latest album. Get it. Listen to his words. He said at the gig, "you know we all have hassles and things going on, but sometimes you just have to dance!". What truth, from a man that has had a lot more "hassles" than most. Thankyou Archie.
If you like the idea of recognising aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in our Constitution then check out www.recognise.org.au and find out more.

If you have thoughts to share on this I'd love to hear.
